Rodarte Community Center Boxing Club Sends Two Talented Athletes to Las Vegas
In 2025 Northern Colorado saw two of its finest young boxers from the Rodarte Community Center Boxing Club travel to the 2025 USA Boxing National Junior Olympics which was held from June 14 June 21 in Las Vegas. That year’s event which brought together the top youth boxers from across the country also saw the performance of these local talents which in turn put the Greeley boxing community on the map.

In the 15th year of school John Poland which was a dedicated student at Northridge High School, and 8 year old Viviana Carrillo a talented young athlete from Maplewood Elementary School, both earned their place in this elite competition after years of intense training and dedication. This was the first time out for both John and Viviana at the Junior Olympics which is a huge achievement in itself for their hard work and talent.
John in the very competitive 165 pound weight class put in a great performance. He showed off his skills and determination which took him into the second round where he went up against the best of his division. Although John didn’t go on to the later rounds his performance was very well done and also showed that he is a boxer to watch in the future. Also in the 65 pound weight class we saw what Viviana had to offer and boy did she put forward a great display in the first round. While she didn’t go beyond the first round her performance at such a young age is very promising for what is to come in her boxing career.

While out of the finals in their respective sports, the two athletes did see success in the National Junior Olympics which gave them official national rankings with USA Boxing in which all boxers aim for. Also of great value was the experience of a national stage which they had the chance to compete against some of the country’s best young fighters. In this setting John and Viviana gained first hand experience of the intensity and skill level at which one has to perform to do well which in turn will only fuel their growth and their ambition in the sport.

The athletes had with them coaches Jacob Sanchez and Enrique Garcia which is a which is what and what has been key to the development of these young boxers. The coaches’ dedication to youth development via the sport of boxing has helped to establish the Rodarte Community Center Boxing Club as a respected and vital element of Greeley’s sports scene.
Coach Sanchez said that it is a proud moment for all of us to see John and Viviana compete at the national level. Also they are very inspired by the girls’ dedication and passion which we look forward to support as they go forward in their journeys.

The Rodarte Community Center has an in depth boxing program which includes youth and adult classes. We are a key player in the development of athletes which we see through to improved skill set, increased confidence, and into competition. Our success in getting local talent to the national level stage is a result of our focus on high quality training and community involvement.
Parents and community members are behind the program which they see to have very positive results in terms of young people’s development of discipline, fitness, and sportsmanship.

In the wake of John Poland and Viviana Carrillo’s outstanding performances, the outlook is very positive for Greeley’s boxing community. At the 2025 USA Boxing National Junior Olympics they achieved great success which in turn brings us great pride here in Northern Colorado and also serves as a inspiration to other young athletes in the area to go after their goals in the sport.
As in Las Vegas these young athletes put in the work and compete the Rodarte Community Center is still at it which is to foster talent and see that they have what they need for growth. What they learned in the big stage will be the base they build upon for what is to come and the community is excited to see their success which we will see play out on the state and national scenes.
This is a great story of two young boxers from Greeley which shows the role of dedication, community support, and quality coaching in the development of future champions.
