A stunning display of art and emotion
The Mayhem Ball Tour is a step beyond a typical concert it is an immersive journey into her world of theater, grit and unrelenting creativity Lady Gaga Mayhem Ball Tour 2025. In August we saw the North American stand which opened in Las Vegas at T-Mobile Arena on the 16th of July which also marked the beginning of a continent wide journey which delivers all Gaga has to offer: over the top visuals, musical pyrotechnics, and very personal moments of vulnerability 134.
The Stage: A Dark Wonderland.
Gaga is a maestro at what she does turning pop shows into high art spectacles. This year’s stage design takes up familiar themes which in themselves are great — like that of Alice in Wonderland but puts them through a David Bowie and Marilyn Manson lens. In every aspect from the feathered plumes and layered black lace to the tall spiral stairways and large scale skulls, there is a feel of goth excess which is then amplified by the fire works and dream like set pieces.
Her entry alone sets the tone: Gaga takes the stage in a red three tiered dress which causes the skirts to pool and display the caged dancers below. As the music intensifies the audience is drawn into a world which is a perfect balance of spectacle, story and pop hit.
Structure: Four act and a finale
The show is broken into four separate acts which each present their own feel and theme, also including a strong finish. Titles which include “Every Chessboard Has Two Queens” and “Of Velvet and Vice” which which do so at the same time present the theatrical and emotional story which Gaga tells. Over two hours she takes in a group of over 20 dancers and a dynamic band through which she presents performances as exciting as any from Broadway which see her move between numbers which recall gothic romance, camp drama and raw confession 567.
Highlights and Setlist Surprises
Eclectic Song Selection
- Hits Old and New: The stage is filled with a mix of what’s currently on the charts and favorites from Lady Gaga’s collection. From the Mayhem album we see “Abracadabra”, “Killah”, “Vanish Into You” and “How Bad Do You Want Me” which are paired with also included in the set are such classic hits as “Just Dance”, “Poker Face”, “Born This Way” and “Bad Romance” that get the audience going.
- Deep Cuts and Rarities: For years past this was a treat for fans as Lady Gaga performed fan favorites which had seen little stage time like “Aura” and “Summerboy” the latter of which was making it’s live debut since 2007. Also in store for the dedicated fans was a surprise medley of songs and reworked arrangements like a Phantom of the Opera take on “Shallow” and a very moving solo piano version of “Die With a Smile” which had the arena in silence.
- Reinvented Classics: Songs such as “Paparazzi” are given new life through the use of creative stage design which is seen for instance when in a performance of the song Gaga puts on a pair of platinum heeled shoes and a gossamer white dress which transforms into a rainbow colored stage — then at the end she breaks into a dramatic fall into the stage.
Theatrical Storytelling
Each of the works presents a different aspect of Gaga’s artistry:.
- Act I: In the opening of “Of Velvet and Vice” we see Abracadabra along with what seems like a visual explosion of smoke and fire works. The red draped stage, surreal lighting which plays at the edges of what is real and what is not, and choreographed mayhem set the dramatic tone.
- Act II: Themes of dualities present as Lady Gaga performs out her many personalities blonde angelic light versus dark red clad vampire and all that is in between which is the preoccupation of the evening.
- Acts III & IV: Fan favorites and new tracks also see the stage design transform in elaborate ways: in to gothic settings we see dancers in cages, caped in rainbows and then the stage itself changes to that of an opera house for “Perfect Celebrity” and “Disease 172.
Raw, Intimate Moments
Stepping out to the barricade to share in person, discussing in detail what Mayhem means, also it is the Little Monsters that are at the core of her journey.
A feature of the performance is a routine with Gaga who is accompanied by a red laced up dancer, which is a nod to her past early days in the business; this represents the connection between what was and what is now for her. The stage travel which includes a gondola ride and a reimagined version of “Shallow” which is a main element of the show that which presents the struggle and also the coexistence between the old and the new.
Costumes and Choreography: Bold New World.
Capes which transform into rainbows, gothic bodices, and knee high boots mark each act. In choreography directed by Parris Goebel and staged by Ben Dalgleish we see a blend of intense athletic performance and dramatic story telling. Each movement and look is a calculated statement for maximum impact, yet it all flows naturally.
Political and Personal Statements
At Mayhem Ball we see a wide range of issues put on the table. As guests come in they are invited to put forward their thoughts which range from the political to very personal that which is then put up on screen before Lady Gaga’s appearance. This element we see as a platform for free speech which in turn reflects Lady Gaga’s long standing engagement with activism and self acceptance.
The Emotional Climax
The evening ends where it began: With Gaga the artist, a presence at once large scale and very human. We see huge energetic performances of “Bad Romance” and of Mayhem’s recent hits but then she is gone only to show up backstage via live video, made up of no makeup, in every day wear. She does a very emotional a capella of “How Bad Do U Want Me”, a very personal exit present which also serves as a stage for the night’s mix of confidence and tenderness.
Final Bow: At the top of her game.
Singer, director, actor, ringmaster. At age 39 she takes the stage, her audience, and her place in art with unmatchable vision and voice. For over two hours she transforms the arena into her world and she invites you in with wide open arms and fire in her eyes to live in her mayhem.
