Dawn of Disaster on the Delaware Memorial Bridge
Tractor-Trailer Plunges Off Delaware Memorial Bridge At around 4:00 a.m. a tractor trailer cab — which is also known as a bobtail tractor when it is not attached to a trailer — veered into three southbound I-295 traffic lanes before going into a concrete barrier at the Delaware anchorage. The impact was very forceful which in turn made the concrete wall collapse and the large truck fall into the Delaware River which was at night.
Immediate Response and Search Operations
As soon as the report of the crash came in a large scale emergency response was put in motion. The Delaware River & Bay Authority (DRBA), New Castle County Emergency Management, the Delaware State Police, Wilmington Police, local fire departments and U.S. Coast Guard Air and Marine units all jumped in to action for a search and rescue effort. Dive teams, helicopters, and boats went to the scene which we saw as a confluence of resources from the land and water in a full scale search for the driver and any possible passengers.
At 3:30 a.m. traffic was back to normal, but we were still searching the river.
Details of the Incident
According to reports the bobtail tractor was on the southbound route into Delaware when out of the blue it crossed over three lanes of traffic. At no notice the truck ran onto the concrete pad by the Delaware anchorage then went through the barrier that did not hold up under the great force of the truck. The cab then went off the bridge into the river below also leaving in its wake a large break in the bridge’s protective wall.
Remark which other vehicles were in the incident. From surveillance footage the event was recorded as it happened as of late we don’t know what number of people were in the truck at the time of the crash. At this stage of the investigation the cause of the accident is unknown also officials have not reported on if it was mechanical failure, human error or some other issue that brought about the tragedy.
The Search for the Driver
At first light over the Delaware River the search which had been underway for some time took on a greater sense of urgency. In went the dive teams into the water, also we had Coast Guard helicopters which took to the air above, scanning the river’s surface. The cab was we found out some 20 feet under water but at that point there was no word yet on the driver’s condition or if in fact there were any other passengers.
The river’s great depth and very poor visibility which present great challenge to divers’ efforts made search difficult. But through it all emergency teams pressed on, did not waver in their effort to find any that survived or bring up the dead. The operation was at once a rescue and a recovery which played out in an environment of great uncertainty related to the which of the truck’s passengers had lived and which had died.
Impact to the Bridge and Its Setting
The Delaware Memorial Bridge — which at over 10,000 feet in length and which is a main thoroughfare for over 100,000 cars per day — did not see structural damage from the accident reports issued by engineering and DRBA teams. While there was a great breach in the concrete barrier and report of closed lanes which made the incident very serious and at the same time very disruptive to regional transport.
Motorway users were advised to drive with care, to expect delays and to follow detours as reported while emergency services attended to the issue and did their investigation. In the hours after the accident live traffic reports showed of heavy tie ups but by mid morning things had stabilized.
Community and Official Reactions
The incident sent a wake of disturbance through the local community and also beyond. Commuters and residents reported on the issue of safety of the bridge and the health of the crash victims. Social media was filled with reports of the damaged structure and news from the scene as people waited for reports of the search and the driver’s fate.
Officials from the DRBA and other agencies reported our they are dedicated to a very detailed investigation which also will include review of safety protocols to put an end to repeat of such incidents. Also we saw great value in the quick and coordinated response of emergency personnel which in large part was reported to have been heros in very tough circumstances.
Ongoing Investigation
As of recent reports the cause of the crash is still a mystery. At the scene investigators are looking into the truck’s maintenance history, going over security footage, and talking to any possible witnesses in an attempt to re construct what led up to the truck’s fall into the river. Also at this time the number of people in the truck at the time of the accident is still unknown and also the driver’s identity has not been made public pending notice to family members and more in depth investigation.
DRBA and law enforcement are asking that any person which has information related to the incident come forward as even small points may be very key in what transpired.
