At USA womens lacrosse World Games in Chengdu, China the US women’s lacrosse team put on a brilliant display to win back the gold which they lost to Canada in 2022. Leading the charge was Captain Marie McCool who was named our Most Valuable Player that week. She and her team mates played with great unity, outstanding defense and an offensive prowess which left the competition in the dust.
From the start of the gold medal game McCool set the tone with a goal which set his team’s momentum into action. The USA took off from there after Canada was given a red card in just over a minute which put the Americans in a very strong position which they did not look back from. By the break we saw the USA leading 7-3 at the break which was a result of relentless play, perfect pass work, and excellent goals. It was also a display of the team’s tenacity and togetherness as they held Canada to a single goal in the 2nd and 3rd quarters which they used to pull away and get the 16-8 win.
USA womens lacrosse World Games put in a great performance of two goals and four assists in the final which was the perfect way to end her outstanding tournament run. She left the competition with a fantastic total of 32 points over five games which in fact cements her as a star on the international lacrosse stage. Also doing very well for the USA were Sam Apuzzo, Kenzie Kent, Charlotte North and Cassidy Weeks who all put in big performances with multiple goals and assists.
Our goal keepers Shea Dolce and Taylor Moreno also had key parts to play with big saves Dolce stopped 11 in the first half and Moreno shut out important chances in the second which preserved our large lead.
This victory was a turning point for the US which saw them secure their first gold in the women’s sixes discipline and also put to rest the memories of their 14-12 loss to Canada at the last World Games. The win also confirmed the US’ status as the dominant force in women’s lacrosse which they hold at the present time across field, women’s, and box lacrosse. The US team’s perfect 5-0 record at the tournament as well as a huge 129-50 scoreline over the course of the tournament which also saw them dominate in individual player performance which in turn points to the team’s great depth.
Australia’s stunning bronze medal victory over Japan
USA womens lacrosse World Games – Meanwhile at the World Games which went into extra time Australia won the bronze medal in a very exciting thriller which had fans at the edge of their seats. In a very competitive match against Japan the Aussies pulled out a 13-12 win which went into golden goal in the sudden death overtime. That late goal which proved to be the winner not only got them the bronze but also defended their bronze medal from the last World Games which in turn cements their status as one of the best in women’s lacrosse world wide.
In the bronze medal game it was a see saw contest of physical play, skill and resilience from both teams. Australia’s win was a product of their endurance and they played great under pressure which had several key players that really came through for the team until the final second. Australia’s at the bronze medal game had a mix of experience and determination which displayed to the world their high level of play in international stage. The team put forth great fitness, strength and tactical skill throughout the tournament which also saw the like of Hannah Nielsen and Addie Cunningham do very important work at attack and defense. Our victory over Japan in the close out of the 2nd extra session was a display of the intense competition and also the unpredictable nature of international lacrosse which is what makes the sport so engaging.
USA’s performance in the World Games and the Lacrosse Olympics milestone
In 2025 The World Games in Chengdu were a platform beyond medal competition; they were key in the rise of women’s sixes lacrosse to the stage of Olympic sports. USA womens lacrosse World Games U.S. team’s great performance which included McCool’s brilliant playmaking and the team play signaled out the sport’s growth in talent and global appeal.
Off the back of this victory the USA put forth a dominant performance which saw them play as a unit from the offensive stars putting up the points to the defensive unit which shut down the other team and the goaltenders which were outstanding. Also note their achievement in scoring 14 of their 16 goals via assists which is a sign of great chemistry and unselfish play. Also the win was the USA’s second gold in three games at The World Games which is a mark of a very successful and resilient program.
The USA team broke through with big wins over Australia and Czechia in pool play which saw them display an aggressive style of play and great scoring ability. In the semi final against Australia they won 25-13 which proved they could play at different paces, execute game plans and apply constant pressure. Also through out the tourney the US team’s defense did well in winning back court balls and forcing key turnovers at just the right times which in turn set up fast break and game turning plays.
This we saw play out with the presence of current and former college standouts which we had multiple Boston College and UNC Tar Heel players in. That which put us at an advantage had also the element of experience and skill which we brought to the international level. We have a mix of veteran internationals and up and coming talents which is very good for the future of USA women’s lacrosse as we eye the Olympics and more world championship success.
In the 2025 World Games we saw a great display of women’s lacrosse which in the end saw the U.S. bring home the gold under the leadership of McCool and what the team did as a whole. Also Australia had a great go at it to take home the bronze in overtime which had their fans going wild.
These results point out the growth in competitiveness of the sport and the rise in global play of women’s sixes lacrosse at the top level of the game. Looking to the future what we see is that these teams are right at the front of the pack as they prepare for what is to come as lacrosse pushes for inclusion in the Olympics.
